Dedicated Hosting: Setting Up Your FTP Account
Even though dedicated hosting can be great fun, many people find that the time it takes to upload a site can be a draining activity. Thankfully there are many different ways to upload your site to a web hosting account and if you have not heard about FTP, which stands for File Transfer Protocol, you probably need to think about this now. Your control panel is the gateway to making your life easier.
You will be required to know your FTP hostname or address as well as your domain name. These pieces of information are likely to be well known to you but if you are unaware of what they are, please check the information that you received when you started your dedicated hosting account. There is a strong need to keep hold of this information and correspondence for future reference just in case.
The next step in the procedure requires you to have your FTP username and password. Again, this sort of information should have been provided when your account was set up so if you are unsure of what it is, check back to the correspondence you received when starting your account.
You will be asked if you are looking to include a Start directory, the response should be to leave it blank or to use a single forward slash. The next comes in being asked to enter a FTP port and the response should be “standard” or “21”. This will see you almost at the finish line for uploading a site to your dedicated hosting site but there is one last requirement to have access to FTP client software or a web design software package that can do this for you.
