RAM - How much ?
Hello buddies,
RAM plays an important role in speeding up the PC in addition to the computer processor speed. I just want to know that what is the average size of ram used here by Geekboards members.
I have only one 512MB ram right now. It is enough for me.
What about you ?

I have 1GB in my workstation. If I was still into gaming I would probably have a bit more than that by now. No time for much gaming anymore... lately it's just work, work, work. Not long from now, maybe a month or two, I'll have a new webserver online with 8GB RAM for hosting this site and others.

For the HDD setup, I focused on speed more than space considerations. The new server has 8 x 36GB 15k rpm SCSI HDDs. 2 are in RAID1 for the OS & other stuff, 4 setup in a RAID10 for databases and the last two are hot spares. I also have space for 1 IDE HDD in the server, so will include one of those to have just in case - maybe to use for additional backup copies.
There is one thing I'll be working on that may considerably speed up the databases. I'll keep that under wraps for now, but it should be quite good if it works.

I try to go with a gig these days. Although if your doing anything real advanced like gaming or webserving, 512 is plenty.
The extra 512 just allows for a bit more power. I have (2) 256 pc2700's im looking to sell, if anyone is interested.
But yeah, 2 gig's would be ideal for gaming and more advanced computing.
My mian system is as follows:
Amd Athlon XP 3200+ (2.2ghz)
1 gig of pc3200 ram
160 gig 7.2k rpm
DVD+RW/CD-RW
CD rom
And a Nvidia GeForce 5700
It ran the prey demo, great. So, I don't think im going to upgrade for a long while. Lol.

Hey John,
It depends on what you want to do with a computer but I think 512MB is on the light side. If all you want to do is Word pro, surf the net and email, that might be okay. But if you want to work on photos or several apps at the same time, I would like to look at up wards of 1GB. If anyone was buying a new computer, I would say 2GB minimum. I run 4GB on my laptop.

Right now I'm running 1GB of RAM. It's enough for me seeing as how I just surf the net, check e-mail. Just the basics.
