Remote Desktop from Windows XP to RedHat 9 or later

Can anyone help me here - I have got RedHat Linux 4 on a downstairs computer and I want to connect to that PC giving me the GUI that is on the linux box displayed on my Windows XP machine.

I can SSH in using puTTY. detailed instructions would be appreciated. I hope you can help me with this problem..

What desktop Environment are you using? ex. KDE Gnome etc etc.

I believe you can use VNC viewer for windows and i believe there is an xvnc for linux.

I am not sure where it is in Red Hat but there is a place in the menu to remote desktop connection and this is where you grant permissions for other computers to connect..


Maybe someone else here will actually sign in and detail the instructions for the virtual desktop.

All you need for windows is vnc viewer. I personally am a Debian user..

I spent an hour or so looking into this type of functionality a few weeks back. Check out the rpm packages "vnc" and "vnc-server" - I don't recall the exact settings or what I did to get it to work. It did seem to work quite well, though.

If you have the packages installed, you can go into ntsysv and set vncserver to run as a service and start on boot.

If you do you use vnc make sure that the port is secure outside the network or anyone will be able to use it.

Debian apt has vnc and vnc viewer so i am sure you will be able to find it in rpm

This is EASY...

1) Select “Remote Desktop” from your preferences menu.
2) Now activate the check box “Allow other users to view your desktop”.

That’s all! You can now vnc to gnome* from your windows box using the vncviewer application on port 5900 (unless you change the default).

*Note: You must be logged in to Gnome for the server to be running. If you want to be able to login via VNC to GDM/KDM then this is a bit trickier and I will only cover these steps if they are needed because its a pain in the arse.
