Default Define : Web Design

How would you define a worker such as a Web Designer? HTML and CSS plus images? Complete website construction? Basically, I'm thinking about becoming a web designer for a potential future job, however I'm trying to figure out exactly what it is, what things I shoujld learn first, etc.

When I think of a web designer, I think of someone who can create a tableless xhtml layout that looks great, and knowledge of how to use server technology such as php and mysql. I already know how to do the xhtml and css stuff, but now I just need to learn the php and mysql stuff.

Agreed. Do not waist your time on old languages such as perl and javascript. Dive into the new popular and $ making languages.

I wouldn't suggest crossing Javascript off your list.

As a web designer, you'll need to be able to cover the two aspects of websites: design & programming/coding. You must know how to fully utilize the programs in your posession so you end up with excellent results. As for coding/programming, I suggest JS, PHP, HTML, CSS, C, C++.
